Quota issues: PFI shoots memo to Governor

MARGAO: The Popular Front of India (PFI), in a letter addressed to the state Governor, has demanded implementation of 10% reservation for Muslims in central government jobs and admission to educational institutions as recommended in the justice Ranganath Misra commission report.

The Misra commission report, that was tabled in the last session of the parliament in December 2009, has earmarked 15% of government jobs and seats in educational institutions for minorities, out of which 10 % exclusively for the Muslim community, the PFI pointed out in the memorandum.

“It is unfortunate that certain groups with vested interest try to mislead the people and the government by alleging that providing reservation to Muslims will amount to communal appeasement. They are also attempting to mislead scheduled castes and other backward communities stating that Muslim reservation will reduce their share. But the fact is that the recommendation for Muslim reservation is made not on religious grounds, but due to the relative backwardness of the community. Denying reservation to the most backward Muslim community amounts to religion-based discrimination,” the memorandum adds. The PFI is of the view that additional quota for minorities can be provided without affecting existing reservation quotas enjoyed by scheduled castes.

“When a few eligible dalit groups belonging to minority religions are also brought under scheduled castes reservation, the SC quota percentage has to be increased proportionately,” the memorandum further adds.
