New Delhi: The Press Council of India issued show cause notice to 9 news papers, in response to complaints which were filed by Mr. K.M. Shareef, General Secretary, Popular Front of India.
Popular Front has approached the Press Council of India, the regulatory body over media, in the month of April against 11 news papers and 2 channels for publishing / telecasting defamatory news against the organization, with malicious intention to lower and damage its reputation. Earlier, legal notices were sent to these periodicals and channels, but they failed to respond positively.
Out of 11 complaints against the newspapers, 9 complaints were taken on the file and show cause notices were issued to Dainik Jagran Hindi Daily (Meerut, Uttar Pradesh), Dainik Jagran Hindi Daily (Delhi), Hindustan Times English Daily (Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh), The Asian Age English Daily (Delhi), Deccan Chronicle English Daily (Ernakulam, Kerala), Nav Bharat Times Hindi Daily (Delhi), The Inquilab Urdu Daily (Delhi), The New Indian Express English Daily (Calicut, Kerala), The Sunday Guardian English Weekly (Delhi). The Press Council is waiting for the reply statement from the respondents for further proceedings.
The complaints against the Pioneer and the Sunday Pioneer are pending before the Council for the issuance of show cause notice. In the matter of the complaints against the IBN 7 and Times now news channels, it was informed by the Council that “the electronic media (New Channels and Websites) does not fall under the purview of Press Council of India. The matter thus closed being outside charter. Hence the organisation would look into other legal options to proceed against these two channels.
The advocates Bahar U. Barki, Maroof Ahmed and A. Mohamed Yusuff represented Popular Front of India in the Press Council.
