Coimbatore: Members of the Popular Front of India staged a demonstration in front of the Coimbatore Corporation on Monday Sep 12,2011, against unfair delimitation and reservation of the civic body’s wards.
Protest demonstration led by the district president Raja Hussain. Later, A. Mustafa, district secretary, in a release said, under the delimitation exercise, Wards 1, 2 and 21 in Kuniamuthur Municipality had been merged to form new Ward 87 of the Coimbatore Corporation. Likewise, Wards 1, 2, 3, and 6 of the Kurichi Municipality had been reorganised to form new Ward 95.

The news wards had been reserved for members of the Scheduled Caste and Women, such reservation would go against the interest of the Muslims.

He pointed out that 85 per cent of the over 19,000 voters in the new Ward 95 were members of the minority community. The same was the case with the new Ward 87.

Ignoring the fact, the Corporation had gone ahead with the reservation of the wards. The civic body should have paid attention to the findings of the Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee, which had said that the Muslims were more backward than the Backward Class.

Around 378 protestors arrested and released later.
