Set up Independent enquiry of Faiz Usmani’s death: Popular Front of India

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011
New Delhi: Popular Front of India strongly condemns the death of Faiz Usmani in police custody and demands the Maharashtra government to immediately initiate an investigation by an independent agency on the death of Faiz Usmani. Faiz Usmani who was picked up for questioning for his alleged involvement in the terror attacks died in custody. This is a serious case of human rights violation and the civil society should strongly condemn it. The police was successful in the using the sentiment of masses on Mumbai blast to avoid the questions arising on the mysterious death of Faiz

It was more unfortunate to see the response of media and civil society on the death of Faiz. The death of Faiz is being presented as a death of terrorist but according to the Indian law a person is not guilty until his guilt is proved before the judiciary. The family of Faiz Usmai has alleged that his death was due to excessive torture by the police. Custodial killings are not new phenomena in India; the Indian police have a very dirty past of involvement in custodial killings. The failure of the government to take stringent action on such police officers has created a sense of immunity among such officers and results in such violations.

Popular Front of India demands that the government takes up this issue with utmost seriousness and step up necessary steps to avoid such killings from happening in future.
