End the oppression of Uighur Muslims in China: Popular Front

New Delhi: Popular Front chairman K M Shareef in a statement called on Chinese government to end the oppressive measures it has been using against Muslim minority. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the ban the Chinese government has imposed on fasting during holy month of Ramadan in Xinjiang region.

China has banned civil servants, students and teachers in its mainly Muslim Xinjiang region from fasting during Ramadan and ordered restaurants to stay open. The China’s ruling Communist party for years has restricted Muslim religious practice in Xinjiang, home to the mostly Muslim Uighur minority. Even schools are ordered to communicate to students that they should not fast or observe any related rituals.

Strangely, according to a notice on the government’s website mosques must check the identification cards of anyone who comes to pray during Ramadan. This whole exercise to restrict Islam in China is in contradiction with the standing provisions of the Chinese constitution and bare violation of basic rights for freedom of religion and worship.
The persecution of Muslim minority China in the name of preventing extremism has taken many innocent lives. It is very clear that these oppressive measures on Muslim Uighur are part of the Chinese agenda to eliminate the centuries of Islamic culture of Millions of Muslims in the country.

Shareef called on international community to press Chinese government to end the oppression of Uighur Muslims. He also asked Indian government to condemn the act of Chinese government.

Yours faithfully,
