Kerala court issues notice to Times Now Channel over defamatory news

Trivandrum: A court in Malappuram district of Kerala has issued a notice to Times Now over a defamatory news broadcast by the channel about AS Zainaba, President of National Women’s Front.
Malapuram Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, in its notice, has ordered Times Now Editor in-Chief Rahul Shivshankar and news presenter Anand Narasimhan to directly appear before the court on 30 August.
Connecting with Hadiya case, Times Now had broadcast news on 30 August 2017 along with an interview of AS Zainaba, which accused Zainaba of trying to convert girls from other religions to Islam. Subsequently, Zainaba had sent a rejoinder to the channel explaining that the accusations were baseless and fabricated. The channel was circulating parts of the interview by distorting it with false allegations. It is when the channel refused to publish her rejoinder that Zainaba filed a 2 crore defamation suit pointing that the news item published by Times Now was fabricated to defame her.
After examining the records submitted by the complainant and the evidence, Magistrate K Varun issued a notice to the channel authorities asking them to directly appear before the court.
Advocates A Abdul Latheef, Abdul Shukoor and A A Raheem appeared for A S Zainaba.
