The Central Secretariat of the Popular Front of India has strongly condemned the atrocities committed by the Maharashtra Police to the hapless Muslims of Dhule, demanded probe by an agency outside the state to identify the culprits and put them on trial, and to pay compensation to the victims.

Six people have been killed in the police firing and more than 200 persons injured including women and children that followed an local scuffle on Jan 6 between two communities. There is strong and convincing evidence that the police were giving vent to their communal bias against the Muslims in the area. More than 70 Muslim youths were shot at while only two Hindus were injured. The police went on a rampage and set fire to the houses and looted cash and gold ornaments and recklessly lobbed tear gas shells with out following the standard operational procedure. This is evident in the all quarters of the Muslim-inhabited area, where vehicles, shops and handcarts could be seen gutted at every corner.

These acts of high handedness are expression of the bias and prejudice seen in Maharashtra Police covertly fueled by all the political parties including the ruling INC and NCP. Maharashtra is the only Congress- ruled state where large number of Muslim youths are still wasting away in jails for imaginary crimes or for those committed by Hindutwa forces.

Popular Front calls for end to such police brutalities through exemplary preventive measure like immediate suspension of the police officers involved. They should be charged under the laws of the land for homicide, arson and wanton destruction of properties.
