Justice Rajindar Sachar Memorial Evening held at Popular Front Headquarters

A memorial get-together programme was held on Friday 27th April to pay tribute to Justice Rajindar Sachar, the renowned scholar, jurist and activist who passed away on 20th April 2018, creating a big void in struggles for democracy, secularism and civil rights, The programme at the Headquarters of Popular Front of India in New Delhi was attended and addressed by Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood, former Officer on Special Duty, Sachar Committee & Chairman, Zakat Foundation of India, Adv. Akshay Bhandari, grandson of Justice Sachar, E.M. Abdul Rahiman, NEC Member, Popular Front of India and Prof. P. Koya, Managing Director of Thejas Daily.
E.M. Abdul Rahiman said that no doubt Justice Sachar was the best friend of Indian Muslims, but he would like to call him not a mere friend, but their real leader. Abdul Rahiman recollected an interview with Justice Sachar last year, in which he said: “Our committee has done our work. Now it is the duty of Muslim community to secure their rights from the government. Their situation will be changed if only the community endeavour for change.”
While sharing his long work experience with Justice Sachar, Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood said that we could rarely find such a man like Justice Sachar committed to human values and causes of downtrodden masses during the last few centuries. He reminded that the best way of paying tribute to the architect of Sachar Report is to increase the Muslim representation in the governance.
On the memorial evening in the name of his grandfather, Adv. Akshay Bhandari told that he lived such a simple life that we could not even imagine in our lives. He said: “My grandfather had refused to have security guards after he was appointed to the PM’s High Level Committee. Whenever we went to his office, we saw people from all spheres of life there together. He did not discriminate anyone. He was against suppression any kind to anybody. He always believed in equality.”
Prof. P. Koya said that Sachar was a great motivator and catalyst for the all human beings especially the weakest among them and he always represented the composite culture of India.
The meeting also commemorated Maulana Muhammad Salim Qasmi, the vice president of AIMPLB & Nazim of Darul-Uloom Waqf Deoband as well as Maulana Abdul Wahab Khilji, former General Secretary, Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadees who passed away recently.
Popular Front Delhi state president Parvez Ahamed welcomed the guests and audience and Dr. Muhammad Shamoon, PR Director at Headquarters of Popular Front of India gave vote of thanks. Popular Front state secretary Mohammed IIyas conducted the programme.
