SDPI demands the release of TN fishermen

Social Democratic Party of India condemned the death penalty awarded to five Tamil fishermen and demanded the immediate release of them. A protest demonstration was held at Ramanathapuram on November 13.

The protest was presided by SDPI East District president Somu. District General Secretary Abdul Jameel, West District president Mohamed Ishaq, General Secretary Asghar Ali, SDTU State Treasurer Karmegam and Popular Front of India District President Basheer Ahamed also participated.

The five fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested on November 28, 2011 by the SriLankan navy near Kachateevu. Later a case of drug trafficking was registered against them along with three fishermen Yazhpanam. A Colombo court awarded death sentence to all the eight fishermen on October 30. Widespread protests are conducted by various political parties in the State. But the Central Government has not taken any concrete step in this regard.

SDPI organized the protest demanding the release of the fishermen and also said that more protests will be planned if proper steps are not taken. Nearly hundred people participated in the protest and were arrested. The arrested were later released.
