Popular Front expresses shock over FIR for speaking against mob lynching

Popular Front of India Chairman E Abubacker has expressed shock and outrage over the news that FIR was lodged against nearly 50 celebrities for writing an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveying concern over the growing incidents of mob lynching in the country.

Reportedly, FIR was lodged against the celebrities under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those relating to sedition, public nuisance, hurting religious feelings and insulting with intent to provoke breach of peace. These charges are nothing but ridiculous and sheer misuse of law to intimidate people. It is outraging that exercising free speech, defending the right to dissent and questioning violence against minorities and dalits are now considered crimes in the country. The chief judicial magistrate who passed the order demanding action on the petition filed by a local advocate has either a skewed sense of justice or lost touch with realities in the country. Even Supreme Court of India has noticed the mob violence in the country and recommended legislations against it.

Popular Front Chairman expressed his solidarity with the celebrities and assured that the organization would stand by the right of the citizens to speak what they want.
