Dr. Anand Teltumbde and Gautam Navlakha victims of state vendetta, SC rejection of their plea disappointing: Popular Front

Popular Front of India Chairman OMA Salam has called the charges against social activists and writers Dr. Anand Teltumbde and Gautam Navlakha unfounded and part of political vendetta.

The Supreme Court has rejected the petition filed by Dr. Anand Teltumbde and Gautam Navlakha asking for a reprieve from arrest for six weeks due to Corona risks. The SC has asked them to surrender them within a week’s time. When many countries are considering emptying their prisons due to the threat posed by the global pandemic, SC has displayed disheartening and disregard for the health of the citizens who are over 65 years of age. In a country where jails are already overcrowded, courts turning a blind eye to the world realities are shocking and disappointing. Their arrest, which will reportedly take place on 14 April, the birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, the architect of our constitution raise grave questions before the nation. The charges against them have no evidence and are part of the vendetta and silencing of the dissent that has been started by the Modi government since 2014.

These sinister moves show that instead of prioritising the prevention of public health threat posed by COVID 19, the central government is making use of the lockdown as a convenience to intensify its cruel autocratic character. Popular Front demands to halt the move for arresting Anand Teltumbde and Gautam Navlakha. We also demand the immediate release of all political prisoners to avoid the risk of CoronaVirus in the prisons.
