Saturday, February 18th, 2012
Police action came in the backdrop of SDPI black march to the office of Kerala CM yesterday demanding the repeal of sedition charge against its activists.
State president Nasaruddeen Elamaram said that police decision marked the victory of SDPI agitations.
Earlier Kozhikode police commissioner G Sparjan Kumar had promised to revoke sedition charge. He had made this promise to the SDPI delegation who met him during the protest march to his office at Kozhikode. Hundreds of people had marched to the commissioner’s office demanding the abrogation of the 124 A section of IPC.
It was the Sub Inspector of police at Nadakkavu station in Kozhikode slapped strong charges including section 124 A of IPC against SDPI activists for protesting against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The protest was in the backdrop of cyber surveillance over Muslim leaders and journalists from the state. Kerala government had decided not to look into the allegation which was flayed by various groups and parties.
CM had reached Kozhikode to take part in an official function and SDPI activists showed black flags demanding thorough enquiry into the e mail hacking incident. High ranking officers of the Kerala police had directed the Cyber Cell wing to furnish details regarding the e mails of 258 Muslims including of former Muslim League MP and journalists in the state.
