The Tamil nadu state unit of Popular Front of India decided to conduct the Unity March and public program at Ramanathapuram district on the occasion of Popular Front Day. The permission for the same was received well in advance. The district police administration had given the permission for the parade and public program in written.

Nearly seven thousand people gathered at the spot and the March was flagged off by National Executive Council member Advocate Mohammed Yousuff. But as soon as the parade started, the police lathicharged the parade troop members. In the meantime, certain miscreants hurled stones towards the gathering. The police made use of this situation and lathicharged the entire gathering. Tear gas was also used by the police and nearly fifty people were injured. Around twenty were severely injured and are now being treated at various Government hospitals around the city.

Sensing the situation getting out of control, the leaders and cadres of Popular Front of India pacified the crowd and entered into talks with the police. Meanwhile two miscreants who hurled the stones were captured by the public and handed over to the police. A few others escaped from the spot. It was identified that the miscreants were none but the informers of the police department and worked as per their instructions. As soon as the miscreants were arrested, the police stopped the lathicharge and use of tear gas. A few witness also informed that it was the police who hurled the stones towards the gathering.

Its evident that a few in the police and intelligence department has hatched this conspiracy with the malicious intent of creating a wedge between the Government and the Muslims, especially the Popular Front of India.

The leaders of Popular Front cancelled the public program as they had no trust in the police. The public were informed to vacate the spot. Later the leaders visited the injured in the hospital.
