Popular Front of India has conveyed deep condolence in the sad demise of Janab Syed Shahabuddin Sahib, former member of Indian parliament and a great champion of social justice and people’s rights in the country. Popular Front chairman E. Abubacker in his message remembered with reverence the concern and sincerity to the people that were consistent of Syed Shahabuddin throughout his life till his last breath.
Syed Shahabuddin has long years of career as a diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service, but later joined politics to serve the cause of marginalised sections, especially the backward Muslim community. His will be remembered for his political contributions as a member of the Parliament for three terms during 1979-1996. But his footprints are there more as models for others because of his uncompromising stands and pro-active interventions in issues like Muslim Personal Law, Muslim Reservation and Babri Masjid. He replaced the general style of Muslims reacting emotionally to issues, with consistent and systematic approaches supported by undeniable facts and figures. The monthly research journal Muslim India, published by him for about a quarter century was the first of its kind and the gap created due its closure still remain. Popular Front chairman reminded that the most valuable tribute that can be paid to the deceased is to take forward the struggles on the core community issues for which he was committed throughout life.
